This case study highlights the experience of IIRSM Mentoring Scheme participant Kennedy Wong, Business Partner | HSEQ – Hong Kong (APAC) at Arup, and explores his motivations, key insights and the overall impact of the programme on his professional development.

Motivation for joining the IIRSM Mentoring Scheme

Reflecting on what inspired his involvement, Kennedy shared:

“To me, mentoring is a shared journey of learning, grounded in trust, thoughtful challenge and mutual growth.

I became involved in the IIRSM mentoring programme because I have always valued supporting others, whether through mentoring, lecturing or simply sharing experience with fellow professionals. What I particularly value about IIRSM is that it brings together professionals from different risk-related disciplines and backgrounds. That diversity is one of the reasons I value being part of IIRSM.

The platform gives mentoring a more intentional space. It encourages people to set aside time for meaningful conversations, reflection and professional development that can otherwise be overlooked in a busy working environment.”

Most valuable aspect of the programme

Kennedy highlights reflection as a defining feature of his mentoring experience:

“For me, the most valuable part is the reflection. Although I joined as a mentor, I do not see mentoring as a one-way process. It is not just about giving advice or having the answers. Some of the best discussions come from listening carefully, asking the right questions and sometimes being challenged by a different perspective. There is also an element of reverse mentoring. It may not be formally described that way, but I do feel that both sides can learn from the relationship.”

Impact on confidence and professional direction

Discussing the broader impact of the programme, Kennedy explained:

“It has reinforced something I already believe strongly: developing people is one of the most meaningful ways to make an impact.

Alongside my day-to-day role, I am involved in mentoring, lecturing and professional engagement. The programme has reinforced my commitment to keep contributing in this area, not only through technical knowledge, but also by supporting confidence, judgement and professional growth in others.”

Recommending the IIRSM Mentoring Scheme

Kennedy strongly recommends the IIRSM mentoring programme to both mentors and mentees:

“Yes, absolutely. For mentees, it provides a supportive space to reflect, ask questions and explore their development. For mentors, it is also a learning experience. It encourages us to listen more carefully, reflect on our own practice and appreciate perspectives from others. Mentoring is not simply about giving advice. It is about learning together, building confidence and strengthening the professional community around us.”
