What does IIRSM Fellowship mean to the women helping shape the future of risk and safety?
For Nicola Kingdon, IIRSM Fellowship was an opportunity to reflect on more than 20 years in health, safety and risk management and formally recognise the contribution she has made to organisations, people and the wider profession.
Nicola believes Fellowship is about more than technical competence. It demonstrates professional credibility, leadership and a commitment to raising standards across our industry.
Why did you apply for Fellowship at this point?
After more than 20 years in health, safety and risk management, Fellowship felt like the right next step. In my current role as Health and Safety Manager at Collegiate UK, I have had the opportunity to lead significant initiatives, including achieving ISO 45001 accreditation and securing ROSPA Gold recognition. Fellowship recognises not only technical competence but also the influence we have on organisations, people and the wider profession. It felt like the right time to reflect on that journey and formally recognise the contribution I have made.
How did you find the process?
The process was straightforward and gave me an opportunity to look back at my career and the progress I have made. Like many professionals, I am usually focused on the next challenge, so it was rewarding to reflect on the impact of my work across different sectors and organisations. The application encouraged me to recognise achievements that I might otherwise have taken for granted.
What would you say to other risk professionals about becoming a Fellow, and what does it mean to you?
I would encourage anyone who has built significant experience and is making a strategic contribution to their organisation to consider Fellowship. For women in particular, it is important that we recognise our achievements and put ourselves forward for opportunities like this. Fellowship demonstrates professional credibility, leadership and commitment to raising standards within our industry.
For me, becoming a Fellow is something I am proud of. It represents the experience I have gained throughout my career, but it also provides an opportunity to inspire and support other women considering a career or leadership role within risk and safety management.
