Priya Kalyanasundaram, Senior Manager, Technical Programs, Health and Safety, Amazon, explains her journey to becoming an IIRSM Fellow

What first sparked your ambition to pursue Fellowship and was there a defining moment when you knew you were ready?

I wanted to be part of an institution where professional recognition is tied to participation, contribution and responsibility, not just a title.

The defining moment I knew I was ready was when my perspective shifted from “How do we manage risk?” to “How do we make risk management easier to do well?” I strongly believe technology when used responsibly can simplify complex work: turning scattered information into clear priorities, reducing admin burden, spotting patterns earlier and helping people focus on prevention rather than paperwork. I felt ready for Fellowship when I could clearly explain that vision, see how I have contributed to it and commit to advancing it through IIRSM in a way that helps the wider group of professionals.

How has becoming a Fellow changed the way you see yourself as a professional and leader?

Becoming a Fellow has widened my lens. I now think less in terms of “what works in my environment” and more in terms of what stands up globally across industries, cultures, and regulatory expectations. It’s pushed me to look at risk and safety through a broader, international perspective and to stay curious about how others solve similar problems in different contexts.

It has also made me more deliberate about compliance and ethics. I’m more intentional in how I weigh decisions not just on speed or outcomes, but on what is defensible, fair and responsible.

What do you value most about being a Fellow of IIRSM, beyond the post-nominals, and why does it matter?

What I value most about being a Fellow is that it gives me a platform to serve. IIRSM isn’t just recognition, it’s an active community with members across 90-plus countries, and the Fellowship opens your mindset to contribute at that global level. The biggest value for me is the opportunity to give back in practical ways through IIRSM’s volunteer network, mentoring scheme and Emerging Risk Leaders Network.

What is the biggest myth about the Fellowship application process that you would like to debunk?

That you need a perfect career story with 100 per cent success or that you need an executive or C-suite title.

From your experience, what makes a Fellowship application truly stand out – and what advice would you give to someone considering applying?

The applications that will stand out are the ones that tell a clear story with examples, outcomes, and the “why” behind the work.

My advice would be: Don’t generalise. Use strong examples and go deep.
Show how you influenced people and decisions, not just what you delivered.
Choose referees who can speak to your impact and leadership, with specific examples

I’m a Fellow, but I’m also a lifelong learner, I am someone who loves using technology to turn complex risks into simple, practical solutions that make work safer every day.

How do you see Fellowship contributing to greater diversity, inclusion and representation across the risk and safety profession?

For me, the biggest impact comes when Fellows actively mentor, sponsor and open doors, especially for professionals who might not have traditional access to networks or leadership platforms. Diversity strengthens safety and risk work because it brings different experiences into the room, which means greater access and better decisions.
