Thank you for applying to be a mentor or mentee under IIRSM’s mentoring scheme.
This Mentoring Code of Conduct sets out the standards of behaviour expected of all users of the IIRSM Communities Platform. Its purpose is to ensure that mentoring interactions are safe, respectful, inclusive, and focused on learning, growth, and mutual benefit. Please read it carefully. If you have any questions or comments, please contact us.
Mentees are expected to:
Understand what mentoring is and each role within the relationship
Agree and commit to the mentoring duration and process
Clarify to your mentor what you would like to achieve
Agree how and when you will be working together at the beginning of the relationship
Maintain respectful communication
Observe confidentiality
Be receptive to feedback and guidance
Mentors are expected to:
Understand what mentoring is and each role within the relationship
Validate that mentoring is the best solution for support
Agree and commit to the mentoring duration and process
Seek further clarity on mentee’s objectives, to be clear on the required outcome by giving both positive and constructive feedback
Share knowledge, insight, and experience without imposing decisions
Deal professionally with any conflicts of interest that arise
Observe confidentiality
Both mentor and mentee should ensure that they:
Agree how long the mentoring relationship will last. We recommend 3-6 months, but it is also possible to extend these later or have a ‘one-off’ session. Either way, you must both confirm the duration and ending the relationship early must be done by mutual consent
Set expectations around availability and accessibility of one another - please remember this scheme is voluntary, often performed alongside demanding jobs
Feel comfortable to proceed with the relationship and the mentor must ensure they have the necessary skills and experience to support their mentee
Prepare for the meeting and are clear on expectations and ground rules
Have a clear understanding of and an agreement of the level of confidentiality required within the mentoring relationship
Close the relationship at the right time, reflect and share feedback (The mentee should evaluate their development in line with the objectives agreed)
Observe and refer to the guidance documentation provided in the categories of the platform
All mentors and mentees must be active members of IIRSM in order to participate in the mentoring scheme and use the platform.
IIRSM is committed to providing an inclusive mentoring environment.
The following behaviour is not tolerated:
Harassment, bullying or intimidation
Discrimination based on race, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, religion, age, or any other protected characteristic
Hate speech or derogatory language
Retaliation against anyone who raises a concern
The Mentee is responsible for their own achievements and success. The Mentee shall not at any time be obliged to act on any information, suggestion or guidance given by the Mentor as part of the services, but if and to the extent that it does so, it shall do so at its own risk. Whilst the Mentor may provide information, suggestions or guidance, ultimately the Mentee is liable and responsible for any decision they make and action they take in response to this. IIRSM has no liability under any circumstances whatsoever for any loss or damage that may be suffered by the Mentor or Mentee from involvement in this mentoring programme.
