Overview

As a risk professional, have you ever struggled to communicate what sustainability really means in an organisation, and why it matters?

Is it difficult sometimes to get other people in the organisation to see sustainability in the same way you do, and take preventive action to ensure the organisation and all its stakeholders operate in a way that adds value to all?

Maybe it’s a challenge to cut through the communication clutter and deliver messages on sustainability that resonate, and lead others to adopt more sustainable working practices?

And how do you communicate sustainability in a way that shows that it is designed into the workplace and the communities involved and not a ‘bolt-on’ feature that risks being a ‘tick-box’ exercise?

If you have any of these challenges as a risk, health and safety and/or sustainability professional, join us and a panel of sustainability experts for the third episode in a brand new IIRSM webinar series on Effective Risk Communication.

Host

Hosted by Karen J. Hewitt, Fellow of the IIRSM and Director of Leaderlike, the Safety & Risk Communication Specialists, we’ll be asking the questions that find simple answers to these dilemmas and more.

Intrigued?  Well here’s whose joining us for this episode….

Panellists

Ross Muir

Ross is the Head of Health, Safety & Sustainability at Jersey Electricity, where he leads the organisation’s integrated approach to risk, safety culture, and long‑term sustainability. With experience spanning health & safety management, environmental governance, and organisational resilience, Ross focuses on how meaningful communication can translate complex risk and sustainability challenges into clear, actionable, and credible messages.

In his role, Ross oversees the development of Jersey Electricity’s ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 management systems and works across the organisation to strengthen communication practices that support safe operations and responsible environmental performance. He is particularly interested in how sustainability communication can bridge the gap between technical insight, behavioural influence, and organisational purpose, ensuring that sustainability is understood not only as a strategy, but as a shared responsibility.

Ross is also a postgraduate student at the University of Cambridge, where his research examines safety, resilience, and just transition within the decarbonisation of small, import‑dependent island energy systems. This work reinforces his commitment to transparent, evidence‑based communication, especially in contexts where competing priorities, public expectations, and long‑term uncertainty must be navigated clearly and responsibly.

Ross contributes regularly to internal and external discussions on risk, sustainability leadership, and organisational culture.
