This presentation will cover:

 

  • Failures of temporary works.
  • Failures where temporary works should have been used.
  • Incidents where there have been ‘near misses’.
  • Incidents where temporary works have been more extensive / expensive due to permanent works design decisions.

 

Lessons from each of the case studies will be identified and discussed.

Mike Webster BEng, MSc, PhD, DIC, CEng, FICE, FIStructE,  Director, MPW R&R Ltd

Mike is a chartered engineer with over 30 years’ experience.  He is the Director of MPW R&R Ltd, specialising in CDM, construction / structural safety and risk / regulatory issues.  He provides consulting, forensic engineering and expert witness services in those areas.

He is a member of the Temporary Works forum, the Institution of Structural Engineers Health and Safety Panel, Structural-Safety and CROSS (the Panel for Confidential Reporting on Structural Safety).

Mike has led independent evaluations of CDM 1994 and CDM 2007 and, in 2021, was appointed by the HSE to lead a review of the CDM 2015 Principal Designer role.  In 2021, he wrote the CIOB guide on ‘Managing Temporary Works: An overview’.

Mike spends much of his time these days acting as an Expert Witness following collapses and other problems on construction sites.  He has been instructed by both prosecution and defence teams on a range of cases including problems with temporary works.
