Enablers and blockers for neurodivergent colleagues in a neurotypical world - experiences of a neurodivergent professional!


Globally, 15-20 percent of the population is estimated to exhibit some form of neurodivergence, that is, one in five employees in an organisation are neurodivergent.

 

In this talk, I will describe lived experiences as a neurodivergent, and strategies and coping mechanisms that have worked for me in my workplace.

 

I will also touch upon how to create a neuroinclusive workplace, and why it is essential to prioritise and invest in the success of neurodivergent employees to promote an equitable work environment.

Dev Agarwal, Director of Safety, Health and Wellbeing at Work University of York

Dev is a neurodivergent senior leader with twenty years of experience within the public and private sectors across the United Kingdom, Australia, and the Middle East. He is proud to be one of the first and youngest neurodivergent senior health and safety leaders within the U.K. higher education sector.

Dev provides overall strategic leadership and guidance for the workplace health, safety and wellbeing matters at the University of York. Dev leads a team of highly skilled individuals with a wide-ranging area of expertise in the field of health and safety including specialist risks such as occupational health service, biological safety, chemical safety, fire safety, and radiation and laser safety.

Dev supports the sector through volunteering within various capacities and is currently an Executive member of four global organisations for health and safety professionals. Further, he mentors and coaches’, health and safety colleagues and peers, through the Institution of Occupational Safety & Health (IOSH) mentoring programme.
