Overview

This talk and conversation puts a focus on what designers need to do and what they do not need to do (but are often doing) to comply with their statutory duties under CDM 2015. Liz is a passionate fan of the construction industry but knows only too well that it could be so very much better. We only need to read the Latham, Egan or the Grenfell reports to recognise this. We can cast our gaze upon much needed industry initiatives trying to fix the worst failures to see where experience shows us our biggest challenges sit.

With a focus on the designers’ duties under CDM, Liz shows how excellence in design is at the heart of what designers should be doing for their part. She touches on what they do not need to be doing to comply with CDM with a focus on probability x severity risk matrices.

Designed to stimulate and challenge, this presentation should also provide a learning experience for attendees.

Speaker

Liz Bennett, Director, Safety in Design

Liz Bennett is a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers, a health and safety practitioner and  Fellow of the RSA. Professionally Liz is most proud of changing the way the public behaves on the fast road network within a 3 year period by collaborating with key stakeholders and communicating clearly and effectively; of being the first group health and safety manager for Atkins (now Atkins Realis) and being interim head of H&S for LOCOG for the London 2012 Olympic Games. Currently Liz’s interests are in information and data management and communication, both because most of her work is training but also because until practical work starts on site, everything is about ideas, decisions, information and communication. And we all know how easy it is to make mistakes there.
