AI and safety technology are rapidly reshaping the risk and safety landscape, with hundreds of new AI-backed tools launching and bold claims about their impact. But what’s genuinely useful, and what’s just hype?

This session provides a clear, practical guide for risk and safety professionals navigating this fast-changing space. Drawing on real-world experience from across the safety technology industry, we’ll cut through the noise to explore where AI and digital tools are already adding value, where they fall short, and what to approach with caution.

As well as understanding the market, you’ll learn how to work effectively with AI in your own role: what it’s genuinely good at, where it shouldn’t be trusted, how to spot the difference, and how to bring it into your work without losing the judgment and rigour the role demands.

What you’ll leave with:

  • A clear view of where AI and safety tech are delivering real value today, and where they’re overhyped
  • Practical ways to use AI in your day-to-day risk and safety work
  • The ability to judge a safety tech product before you trust it
  • An understanding of AI’s limitations, risks, and where human judgement remains essential
  • A clearer sense of how to make this technology work for you rather than the other way round

Speaker - Peter Thomas

Commercial Systems | Safety Tech

Peter Thomas has spent over 20 years in risk, from the military and armed policing through to health and safety roles internationally.

As AI entered the sector, he saw a gap. Safety tech companies often did not fully understand safety professionals or what drives their decisions. At the same time, many safety professionals remained sceptical of technology that felt disconnected from the realities of their work.

Today, Peter works with safety tech companies, helping founders understand the market they are selling into and build the commercial systems that generate repeatable revenue.

He is also the host of the Safety Tech Show, a podcast featuring founders and practitioners from across the industry.
