Middle East Update 2015

The Institute’s influence within the Middle East region has continued to grow during the second quarter of 2015 with representatives of the Middle East Branch Committee invited as guest speakers to a variety of events including World Safety Day celebrations, careers fairs and safety awareness campaigns of major projects within the UAE. With IIRSM being supporting partners of the 3rd Annual HSSE Forum recently held in Muscat, Oman, Matt Cox, Middle East branch chair gave one of the keynote addresses.

In the UAE, branch networking events were held in both Dubai and Abu Dhabi with guest speakers presenting on a variety of topics, including the confined space working, hand safety and behaviour based safety programmes.

A little further afield, IIRSM operations in Qatar have seen steady membership growth since the turn of the year and consequently, from July 2015 onwards (subject to Council approval), the branch will operate independently of IIRSM Middle East, under the leadership of Viv Turner and Mike Preston, who will assume chair/vice chair roles respectively.

Finally, cementing our relationship with regulators in the region, IIRSM deputy chief executive Greg Brown recently visited to continue dialogue with regulators in both the UAE and Qatar. This communication will be further enhanced when the senior leadership team includes Oman in its next visit to the Middle East in September.
