Industry event: A practical look at the PD role
Date of Issue: Tuesday, 11 April, 2017

The International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM) in partnership with the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) is delighted to announce a series of three major industry events designed to address the issues and concerns around the CDM 2015 regulations. Health and safety professionals, architects, designers, clients and principal contractors will all benefit from attendance.
Two years on there is still confusion relating to the Principal Designer role. These events bring together industry representatives to discuss a range of issues and viewpoints and provide practical guidance and solutions on the implementation of the regulations.
What will the events cover?
- An overview of the changes
- Myths and gaps
- Case studies
- Practical approaches and solutions
- Resources and guidance
Clive Johnson, IIRSM Council Member and Group Head of Health, Safety and Security at Land Securities will Chair the Birmingham events and says: “We’re trying to get the whole industry together, including clients, to encourage better communication and collaboration to ensure that the appointed Principal Designer has the relevant skills, knowledge, attitude, training and experience for the scope of works, to ensure the role is effective, adds value and that expectations are understood. “
The events bring together speakers from IIRSM, RIBA, APS (Association for Project Safety), CITB (Construction Industry Training Board) and ICE (Institution of Civil Engineers). Case studies from Land Securities, Network Rail and Laing O’Rourke will provide client and principal contractor viewpoints. Guidance on Design Risk Management and scaling up and down will be covered by risk management experts. Sessions on resources and developing documentation will make these events practical as well as informative. With opportunities for Q&As and networking throughout the day this is definitely not to be missed.
Clare Fleming, Director of Membership and Communications at IIRSM says “We want to make these events as accessible as possible to our members and everyone that they work with so have kept the delegate fee as low as possible and plan to run them in Leeds, Birmingham and London to reach the widest possible audience. We are very grateful to our sponsors, Multiplex, for helping us to do so.”
