Member

As a Member, you will typically be managing operational change and procedures and playing a major role in contributing to policy development and responsible for managing risks within an area of responsibility or organisation-wide projects and objectives.

There are three routes to apply to be a Member:

  • Qualification
  • Qualification and experience
  • Skills, competence and experience

Qualification route

To apply via the qualification route, you will need to provide evidence of completing a level 5 academic or professional risk-related qualification, recognised on the England & Wales Regulated Qualifications Framework or equivalent. Please note, we recognise both regulated and non-regulated qualifications.

Joining process

You can join anytime online, and it will take approximately a week to process your application. You should receive your welcome pack within 2 weeks, but it may take slightly longer for non-UK members due to local postal systems.

If you have not heard from us within 2 weeks of submitting your application, please do get in touch at membership@iirsm.org

Fees payable

Different fees are payable depending on where you are located geographically. You can pay your membership subscription for 1, 2 or 3 years, with a discount for 2- and 3-year payments. Click here to see what fees you need to pay.

Qualification & experience route

To apply via this route, you need to have completed a level 4 academic or professional risk-related qualification AND have a minimum of 3 years' experience working in a risk discipline such as, business continuity, compliance, crisis management, emergency planning, environmental management, insurance, occupational health and safety, quality management, project management, risk management, security, sustainability.

You will need to provide the following: 

  • A certificate or letter from the awarding organisation confirming you have successfully passed your level 4 qualification.
  • A statement of professional competence to be completed on the form provided. Your statement needs to show how you meet a minimum of 3 Technical competences and 4 Leadership behaviours at Managerial level, as set out in IIRSM's Risk Management and Leadership Competence Framework. Before starting your statement, please read the guidance provided on completing your statement of professional competence.
  • A copy of your CV, no more than 2 sides of A4 and should include - career/personal profile, work history, education and skills/achievements.
  • A reference on the form provided from either your manager or another suitably qualified person who can support your application.

You should receive your welcome pack within 4 - 5 weeks, but it may take slightly longer for non-UK members due to local postal systems.

If your application is unsuccessful, we will contact you explaining why, and provide guidance on what you need to do before resubmitting your application. You can resubmit your application once more without paying additional fees.

Experience assessment route

To apply via this route, you have no formal risk-related qualifications but have a minimum of 5 years' experience working in a risk-related discipline. Or working in a non-traditional risk role with some responsibility for risk management, such as Facilities Management, HR, Finance, Human Rights and Procurement.

We normally assess you on your last 10 years’ experience and you need to provide the following.

  • A statement of professional competence to be completed on the form provided. Your statement needs to show how you meet a minimum of 4 Technical competences and 5 Leadership behaviours at Managerial level, as set out in IIRSM’s Risk Management and Leadership Competence Framework. Before starting your statement, please read the guidance provided on completing your statement of professional competence.
