Our inaugural Risk Excellence Awards Dinner was held on 24 May and celebrated risk excellence - from saving money to saving lives.
The awards dinner was an evening of celebration, enjoyment and entertainment and we thank everyone who made it a success - our finalists, judges, sponsors and those who just attended to support their profession.
We were delighted to have Robin Kermode as our host for the evening. Robin is one of Europe’s leading communications coaches and author of the best-selling book, ‘Speak so your audience will listen’. A member of BAFTA’s voting panel, and the voice of the ATP World Tennis Finals, Robin is very much in demand from business leaders and national politicians and is the body language expert for several national newspapers.
Jon Abbott has over 20 years’ experience of ergonomics, safety and occupational health. Over that period he has worked with a wide variety of organisations in the private and public sector providing a full range of risk management solutions including software, e-learning and consultancy.
Jon was instrumental in setting up Cardinus operations in America and across the globe, and is currently responsible for the global strategy of Cardinus Risk Management Limited.
Dom Barraclough is a chartered engineer with European professional registration. He is a corporate member of the IMechE, IET, the IAgrE and is a Specialist Member of and sits on the Technical Committee of IIRSM. As well as practicing as a consultant, an expert witness and a trainer, Dom is the Managing Director of Finch Consulting Limited and, after a £m MBO in 2012 and the exit of private equity with an MBI in 2017, has grown the 27 year company to deliver consulting, expert, legal and learning services in health, safety and engineering specialisms across the globe in a number of sectors and to many blue chip clients.
As well as extensive management experience, Dom has worked in industry for some 30 years in positions ranging from the hands-on shop-floor to senior management and his industrial experience ranges from design through manufacturing to consulting and across a wide range of sectors including automotive, manufacuring, agriculture, food and construction.
Dom is proud that Finch sets a very high bar for its team: Finch puts culture and personality first, but expects exceptional technical ability and commercial acumen from its people.
Heather Beach is the founder and Managing Director of The Healthy Work Company. She has been running businesses in the health and safety community for over 20 years. Having started in information services running the first available health and safety service from HSE on CD-ROM at SilverPlatter - she moved to Barbour and then to Safety & Health Expo, SHP, and IOSH conference.
Heather is a specialist in organisational cultural change. A qualified coach, she and her partners and associates are committed to transforming the way in which the health and safety profession is viewed by the general public. The founder of Women in Health and Safety and the Barbour webinar series which attracts over 3000 attendees a month - Heather continues to run both of these in partnership with UBM. She also writes for SHP.
Matthew Cox is a Fellow of IIRSM and is currently employed as Regional QHSE Manager for the Bauer Group of Companies, overseeing its operations across the Middle East. Matthew joined IIRSM in 2010 and assumed the role of UAE Branch Chairman in Oct 2013, overseeing its growth to become the most successful branch in the history of the Institute.
In 2014, he was recognized by the UAE Ministry of Labour for his contribution to Occupational Health and Safety in the country and additionally, became the first overseas based recipient of the Prestigious IIRSM President’s Commendation award, in recognition of his services to the Institute in the region.
Ruth is the Group Head of Operational Risk at ITV, she started at ITV in 2004 as a Health and Safety Manger and has seen her role grow and change hugely since then. Along with overseeing the Health and Safety support for the now global business, her role covers overseeing the Group Insurance programme, the Occupational Health function, Business Resilience and Child Protection.
Ruth also gets heavily involved in the approach to risk management across the business. The work of her team is underpinned with their shared vision of being collaborative, innovative and empowering which is key to their success. Ruth has recently been working with the London School of Economics on research around risk taking behaviours within the Production making business.
Ruth's career in Health and Safety started in 1997 when she graduated with a degree in Occupational Health and Safety, her first role was as a the National Theatre followed by a brief stint at KPMG and then the Prince's Trust before moving to ITV.
Karla is a risk, business continuity, and crisis management specialist who has worked across many jurisdictions and has a strong appreciation and experience of the complex subjects that can challenge people’s core beliefs and behaviours, such as responding to a global cyberattack, terrorist attacks in various countries, as well as localised, office-based emergencies.
She is actively involved in various risk and business continuity associations and has a particular interest in the behavioural and social aspects of the way people manage and respond to risks and crises. Karla is currently Risk & Business Continuity Manager for DLA Piper, a global law firm and will shortly be joining VinciWorks at Deputy Global Head of Risk and Advisory.
Pamela Gellatly, CEO, healthcare rm
Callum is a risk professional with substantial experience both in industry and in supporting clients as Deloitte’s Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) practice lead. An active member of IIRSM, Callum is part of the Institute’s Education and Training Committee.
Callum has a particular interest in innovation, both how technology might change the risks we need to manage, and how technology can be best leveraged to improve our ability to manage today’s risks.
Helen is the Managing Director for Art of Work Ltd, a management consultancy who help organisations transition between traditional safety and Safety Differently. Helen has over 10 years’ experience working in safety across a wide range of industries, including construction, manufacturing, recycling and government. She has a degree in Health and Safety management and a strong passion for changing perceptions of the industry as well as encouraging businesses to connect with their people to harness an understanding of what work really is like.
Helen sits on the review board for the UK industry magazine, SHP. She is known for her interest in reducing bureaucracy and for her ability in challenging and supporting businesses with their transformational journey between traditional safety and Safety Differently.
Chris Rowlands has spent more than 13 years in the Health & Safety recruitment industry. An economics graduate of Lancaster University, Chris joined The HSE Recruitment Network in 2004 and was appointed a Director in January 2012. He has led the company through it’s international expansion, the launch of “HSE Leaders Connect” – the industry’s premier networking platform for senior Health & Safety practitioners – and the development of psychometric profiling and testing tools that have placed the company at the forefront of candidate assessment techniques.
Chris is also a director of The HSE Recruitment Network’s sister companies; Network HR, experts in the recruitment of HR, Training & Wellbeing professionals, and Procurement People, specialists in the recruitment of Supply Chain & Procurement professionals globally.
Simone is a certified risk professional and former IRM Chairman with proven success in driving the risk management agenda at Board level. She has developed her knowledge, skills and experience through working within organisations across a range of industries in the private, public and not for profit sectors over the past 25 years.
