We aim to provide a meaningful and responsive range of Fellowship options that reflect your experience, needs and personal development objectives.

We have three main options:

  • Fellow (IIRSM member route)
  • Fellow (Recognition route for others in our Like-for-Like scheme
  • Specialist Fellow
Fellow

If this is you..

You are probably seeking to demonstrate and promote to your peers, your employer or clients that you are a significant practitioner in health and safety or a related field.

You may have gained significant experience and qualifications* in health and safety and need to have membership of a leading internationally recognised professional body.

You expect to get access to great resources and benefits as a Member of IIRSM to support you in your role as a professional practitioner in health and safety wherever you work.

You may be in a new role, a succession or promotion, or at a point in your career where you need recognition that you are part of IIRSM’s professional practitioner network and wish to develop further. You may be considering working as a consultant or returning to full time employment.

You may want the additional support IIRSM can offer beyond that available to you elsewhere. As a professional network of practitioners our Fellows and members are valued for their commitment, technical capability and willingness to act.

At the right stage in your career we can offer you Fellow status if you meet the required pre-qualifying criteria.

*Click on the “Qualifications and Experience” Tab to see what could entitle you to consider Fellowship.

Specialist Fellow

If this is you..

You have a career where the majority of your role is not directly as a specific health and safety practitioner but you get involved in managing, advising or responding to health and safety as well.

Your role or background could be in:

  • Enforcement
  • Engineering
  • Law
  • Fire
  • Risk management
  • Estates and Facilities Management
  • Occupational Health
  • Construction
  • Environment
  • Quality
  • National or regional government

You will probably have affiliations or another professional body of first choice, but IIRSM can offer you support in the areas of health and safety risk management.

You have gained significant experience and qualifications* and IIRSM can offer you membership of a leading internationally recognised health and safety professional body.

You also expect to get access to great resources and benefits as a Specialist Fellow member of IIRSM to support you in your role or career.

You may be in a new role, a succession or promotion, or at a point in your career where you need recognition that you are part of IIRSM’s professional practitioner network and wish to develop further.

You may want the additional recognition and support IIRSM can offer beyond that available to you elsewhere. As a professional network of practitioners our Specialist Fellow members are valued for their commitment, technical capability and willingness to act.

You could become a Specialist Fellow and demonstrate your commitment to health and safety or risk management with the recognition you have in your core discipline or specialism.

*Click on the “Qualifications and Experience” Tab to see what could entitle you to consider being Specialist Fellowship.

CPD

We support all our members to continuously develop professionally.

Who has to do CPD?

For members that meet a commitment to professional development our scheme requires you to accumulate 30 CPD points over a three-year period.  Once the 30 points are achieved that member can also use (if they wish) the designatory letters “RSP” (Recognised Safety Practitioner).  This would apply to a Member (MIIRSM), a Fellow (FIIRSM), a Specialist Member (SIIRSM) or a Specialist Fellow (SFIIRSM).

For Fellows and Specialist Fellows this scheme is compulsory.

At your membership renewal you self-certify that your CPD is up to date by declaration.

What can be counted as CPD?

CPD points can be gained by attendance at seminars, undertaking a training course, from self-directed learning, knowledge gained from a mentor or a publication.  You may even have material published or have been involved with innovations or developments that improve or change health and safety practise.
Your CPD points have to be allocated across these three areas (with a minimum of 5 points for each): Maintenance of Skills, New Professional Skills and Transferable-Management Skills.

Does IIRSM check CPD records?

IIRSM carries out random checks of CPD recording.  Members’ selected may be required to submit their CPD record within one calendar month of the request being made.  A review of a CPD Record may be followed-up with a telephone discussion.

Where do I record my CPD points?

An on-line record scheme is available; members should keep their own record or log of CPD activity bearing in mind that they may be required to submit a copy of their record as part of our random sampling.

To access the CPD Scheme you need to be a current IIRSM member and then login to the members’ area of the website.

Is the IIRSM CPD scheme compulsory?

It is if you are a Fellow or a Specialist Fellow or taking part in the Recognised Safety Practitioner (RSP) scheme.  RSP indicates that the member is participating in a scheme to develop and maintain safety professional skills relevant to their safety role.

What is the value of CPD to me?

CPD is all about relevant activity, reflection and evaluation.  It should help you to consider the value of some of the daily activities you carry out in the work you do as a health and safety practitioner.  Any CPD scheme gives us the opportunity to reflect on our knowledge and skills and to provide a stimulus to learn or do more as we develop.

Can other professional body records be used?

Our scheme is about you reflecting on and assessing activities that, in your opinion have been valuable to your understanding of, or development in, health and safety practice.  If you are required to account for CPD with other professional bodies, if it has value to you and fits our requirement for it being relevant to health and safety, then we welcome and acknowledge your achievements that may be logged elsewhere.  We just need to see what you have said and done in our recording system!
