MANAGING RISK

Everyone manages risks, from Board members and the CEO to all front-line workers. Taking a risk-based approach to strategy development, business planning, organisational culture and decision-making is essential.

Customers and regulators take less on trust and expect more assurances than ever before. The changing nature of working practices and events once thought remote, such as climate change, wide-spread terrorism, cyber-crime, artificial intelligence, robotics, mass migration and political uncertainties, means organisations need more than ever, competent people across the organisation with the right risk knowledge, skills, experience and behaviours to effectively manage their challenges.

What will you learn?

This course is highly interactive and uses an applied learning approach with delegates working together, using relevant case studies and learning through real examples.

At the end of the course, you will understand:

  • The benefits, principles and practices of how to effectively manage risk.
  • How to integrate a risk-based approach to strategy development, operations and managing stakeholder relationships.
  • How risk management relates with the broad organisational context and how it can help maximise performance.
  • The importance of a risk-based thinking culture and leadership.
What does your organisation gain from you attending?
  • Resilience through risk competence at all levels within your organisation.
  • New knowledge and skills that can be immediately applied back at work.
  • Applicable case studies and real examples to aid learning and knowledge retention.
  • Training designed by a leading educational risk charity underpinned by its risk management competency framework.
  • Globally applicable training and transferrable skills gained.
Who is the course for?

  • Work in risk management or any other risk-related roles.
  • Work in a non-risk role but are responsible for managing risk in your function.
  • Are responsible for implementing organisational standards, for example, ISO 45001, ISO 9001 and ISO 3100.

Managing Risk for OSH Professionals
MANAGING RISK FOR OSH PROFESSIONALS

A 'risk-based' approach is key to managing Occupational Safety and Health.

This practical one day course helps OSH professionals develop their understanding and practical knowledge of the vital role risk management plays, from saving money to saving lives. The course is fully aligned with international standards, particularly ISO 45001:2018 and ISO 31000:2018.

What is a 'risk-based' approach?
  • Understanding organisational internal and external context.
  • Having purpose beyond mere profit, and values and a culture that embed that purpose.
  • Embracing and managing change.
  • Using risk language aligned with ISO 45001 and ISO 31000.
  • Empowering risk leadership and employee participation at all levels.
  • Linking OSH to wider organisational risk.
  • Engaging stakeholders beyond the workforce.
  • Taking a proportionate approach to managing risk.
Why a 'risk-based' approach?
  • Industry recognises that OSH professionals need a broader appreciation of risk management.
  • The UK's Health and Safety Executive's 3 year strategy promotes a 'risk-based' approach.
  • 'Box-ticking' compliance attitudes to OSH are inadequate to meet tomorrow's risks.
  • Engagement with stakeholders beyond the workforce and culture are key to the reduction and treatment of occupational safety and health risks.

IN-HOUSE MANAGING RISK

We can deliver a standard or tailored version of Managing Risk to specifically meet your organisational needs.

We work through a five step process:

  1. Build a picture - we will have an initial meeting with all relevant staff so we can really understand your organisation’s priorities and external and internal risk environment. We will also look at things like your vision and strategy document.

  2. Engage with your people - we will want to meet relevant stakeholders so we get to know how they think and work, and their level of experience.

  3. Design your programme – we will go away with the information gathered from stages 1 and 2 and draft an outline of the course learning outcomes and content. This will be given to you to review to ensure we are meeting your organisational needs. Once we have agreed and signed off the course content, we will then develop the course.

  4. Deliver your programme - we use experienced and engaging trainers to deliver our training.

  5. Continuous evaluation – we live in a constantly changing environment and continually face new risks and challenges. Our trainers and course developers can be on hand to work with you to regularly review or refresh any training needs. In addition, we can also work with you to monitor how effectively staff have applied their new knowledge back at work.

Why choose IIRSM?

  1. We are an independent risk charity that believes everyone is responsible for managing risk. We believe that educating at all levels is the only way to successfully embed risk management.

  2. We have expertise in our membership from different sectors, which we can draw upon and can provide ‘guest speakers’ as part of any ongoing training.

  3. We have a competency framework that includes technical, business and behavioural competences and all our training is underpinned by the framework.

  4. We can offer discounted membership providing access to ongoing resources and networking opportunities. Training doesn’t stop at the course stage.

  5. We follow a flexible and robust educational process to develop our courses. We always have the final objective in mind.

  6. As a charity, we offer competitive rates and value added through other benefits and services.

  7. We can provide all delegates with a badged certificate of completion which demonstrates your investment to regulators, senior management, patients, staff and other key stakeholders the importance of risk management.
