Draft - Applying to be an Associate

At Associate level we are typically interested in how you provide support, advice, and guidance to others across an organisation, on projects (or client if a consultant) to support function, project, or organisational-wide objectives.  

To apply, you will need to meet one of the following criteria.

Completed at least a level 3 academic or professional risk or risk-related qualification, recognised on the England & Wales Regulated Qualifications Framework or equivalent. Please note, we do also recognise some non-regulated qualifications.​

Have a minimum of 2 years’ demonstrable experience working in a risk or risk-related discipline such as business continuity, compliance, crisis management, emergency planning, environmental management, insurance, occupational health and safety, quality management, project management, resilience, risk management, security, sustainability.

Have a minimum of 3 years’ demonstrable experience working in a non-traditional risk role with some responsibility for risk management or regularly practice it as part of your day job. Roles could include Facilities Management, Finance, HR, Human Rights, Procurement etc.

Qualification route

To apply via the qualifications route, you will need to provide evidence of completing your level 3 academic or professional qualification, which can either be a certificate or letter from the awarding organisation confirming you have successfully passed.

You can join anytime online, and it will take approximately a week to process your application. You should receive your welcome pack within 2 weeks, but it may take slightly longer for non-UK members due to postal and custom systems.

Different fees are payable depending on where you are located geographically. You can pay your membership subscription for 1, 2 or 3 years’, with a discount for 2 and 3 year payments. Click here to see what fees you need to pay.

Experience assessment route

Eligibility to apply via this route will normally be assessed on your last five years’ experience and you need to complete and submit the following:

  • A statement of professional competence to be completed on the form provided at the bottom of this page. Your statement needs to demonstrate how you meet a minimum of 3 competency areas and 3 leadership behaviours at Operational level, as set out in IIRSM's Risk Management and Leadership Competence Framework. Click here or download from the bottom of this page, examples of and guidance on completing your statement of professional competence. 
  • A copy of your CV, no more than 2 sides of A4 and should include - career/personal profile, work history, education and skills/achievements
  • A reference from either your manager or another suitably qualified person who can support your application. The reference form to be completed by your referee can be downloaded from the bottom of this page.
Joining process

You can join anytime online and all the forms and documents you need can be downloaded from the bottom of this page. It will take approximately two weeks to process your application. It may take slightly longer at busier times of the year or during holiday seasons. 

You should receive your welcome pack within 3 – 4 weeks, but it may take slightly longer for non-UK members due to differing postal and custom systems.

Fees payable

Unsuccessful applications

If your application is unsuccessful, we will contact you explaining why, and provide guidance on what you need to do before resubmitting your application. You can resubmit your application once more without having to pay any additional fees.
