Associate

As an Associate, you will typically support, advise and guide others across an organisation or team to support a function, project, or organisation-wide projects and objectives.

There are two routes to apply to be an Associate.

Qualification route

To apply via this route, you need to provide evidence of completing at least a level 3 academic or professional risk-related qualification, recognised on the England & Wales Regulated Qualifications Framework or equivalent. Please note, we recognise both regulated and non-regulated qualifications.​

Joining process

You can join anytime online, and it will take approximately a week to process your application. You should receive your welcome pack within 2 weeks, but it may take slightly longer for non-UK members due to local postal systems.

If you have not heard from us within 3 weeks of submitting your application, please do get in touch.

Fees payable

Different fees are payable depending on where you are geographically. You can pay your membership subscription for 1, 2 or 3 years, with a discount for 2 and 3 year payments. Click here to see the fees you need to pay.

Experience assessment route

We will normally assess you based on your last five years’ experience.

Risk management experience

To apply you will have a minimum of 2 years’ experience working in a risk-related discipline such as business continuity, compliance, crisis management, emergency planning, environmental management, insurance, occupational health and safety, quality management, project management, resilience, risk management, security or sustainability.

Working in a non-traditional risk role with some responsibility for risk management.

To apply you will have a minimum of 3 years’ experience working in a non-traditional risk role with some responsibility for risk management or regularly practice it as part of your day job. Roles could include Facilities Management, Finance, HR, Human Rights, Procurement etc.

You will need to provide the following:

  • A statement of professional competence to be completed on the form provided. Your statement needs to demonstrate how you meet a minimum of 3 Technical Competences and 3 Leadership Behaviours at Operational level, as set out in IIRSM's Risk Management and Leadership Competence Framework. Before writing your professional statement of competence, please read the guidance provided. 
  • A copy of your CV, no more than 2 sides of A4 and should include - career/personal profile, work history, education and skills/achievements.
  • A reference on the form provided from either your manager or another suitably qualified person who can support your application.

You can join anytime online, and it will take approximately 2 to 3 weeks to process your application. It may take slightly longer at busier times of the year or during holiday seasons.

You should receive your welcome pack within 4 - 5 weeks, but it may take slightly longer for non-UK members due to local postal systems.

Unsuccessful applications

If your application is unsuccessful, we will contact you explaining why, and provide guidance on what you need to do before resubmitting your application. You can resubmit your application one more time without paying additional fees.
