Hugh Maxwell, Managing Director of Maxwell Safety Ltd and IIRSM Ambassador, explains what mentorship means to him

As Managing Director of Maxwell Safety Limited, a risk and HSE consultancy firm supporting a range of high-risk industries, Hugh offers expertise in enterprise risk management, health and safety, environmental compliance, leadership development, coaching and mentoring and sustainability.

He explains: “I specialise in focusing on embedding risk-based thinking into strategic and operational decisions, enabling people and organisations to innovate and operate safely, sustainably and responsibly.

“Where I believe I add the most value is in influencing a leadership mindset – helping boards, senior leaders and leaders at all levels understand how proactive, intelligent risk management can unlock performance, resilience and long-term value. I thrive when I’m supporting others, whether mentoring future risk leaders, shaping strategies or simplifying complex challenges. Being able to translate risk data into something that drives practical action and cultural change is where I see the biggest impact.”

Hugh was named winner of the Mentor of the Year award at the Risk Excellence Awards 2025.

He says: “Mentorship is more than guidance; it is about empowering others to unlock their full potential. It is about sharing knowledge, offering support, and fostering confidence in those who are navigating their own journeys – whatever the stage of their personal or professional journey and challenges they are facing. Whether through structured programs or informal coaching, the ability to influence and inspire others is a privilege that I take seriously. Releasing the true potential and talents of others is a really satisfying feeling to a seasoned professional.

“I have seen firsthand how meaningful guidance can transform careers, helping individuals gain clarity, develop resilience, and strive for excellence.

"For me, mentoring is not just about imparting wisdom – it is about creating a supportive, collaborative, and progressive environment where others can thrive. The success of those I have mentored is the true reward and knowing that my efforts contribute to their growth and confidence is what keeps me motivated.

"To everyone who has been part of this journey – colleagues, mentees, and fellow professionals – thank you. Your trust and engagement make this work so rewarding. Regardless of the outcome, I remain committed to championing mentorship, supporting others, and strengthening the profession as a whole.

“IIRSM’s recognition of mentorship as a vital part of professional development is encouraging, and I look forward to continuing this journey of guiding, learning, and growing together.

“What a day of celebration, sharing and total pleasure celebrating 50 years of IIRSM.”
