The future of safety and risk: Insight from Desma Kayando

Based in Nairobi, Kenya, Desma leads the implementation of occupational safety, health and environmental systems across various projects.

She explains: “I ensure compliance with legal and client-specific requirements, drive safety culture initiatives, lead incident investigations and provide strategic guidance to both field and senior management teams.

“I add the most value through my ability to translate complex risk management concepts into practical, people-centred actions. Whether I’m onboarding new technicians, conducting risk assessments or coaching team leaders, I always aim to create psychologically safe environments, where people feel empowered to speak up. I also use storytelling in safety communications to foster engagement and reinforce learning. More recently, I’ve co-founded Safeharbour Consulting Ltd and work with organisations on both OSH and enterprise risk, helping them build resilience and align risk management with overall business strategy.
